Lining Your Spindles for Better Performance

The inner diameter of a spindle compared to the diameter of the barstock fed through it can have a huge impact on the performance of a machine. The spindle’s inner diameter needs to be big enough to properly fit the barstock but it cannot be too large. If the inner diameter of the spindle is too large compared to the diameter of the barstock fed through it, the spinning operation can result in excessive wear and tear. The gap will leave more room for increased vibrations and whipping that can damage the machinery. The result is not just increased wear and tear early on, it also means that the barstock itself will be damaged. Consequently, you lose money for additional maintenance costs and an overall performance which is poorer than it should be.

The solution to this problem? Well, it’s simple. Spindle liners. No matter how close you can get with the inner diameter of the spindle and the outer diameter of the barstock, there will still be a minor gap between them. To avoid the additional wear and tear, keep the performance of your machine high and maintain the machine in a good condition for a longer period of time, using spindle lining can help.

Urethane spindle liners present a very good option when it comes to filling the gap between the barstock’s outer diameter and the inner diameter of the spindle. Spindle liners are made with a variety of materials and are also available in steel other than urethane. These are the two most commonly used spindle liners. When you use steel spindle liners, you can rely on the hardness of the steel to minimize the buildup of metallic chips, which can reduce the quality of the parts.

Urethane spindle liners present advantages that go beyond the ones that steel liners provide. The fact of the matter is that steel will always be as hard as it is. It’s one of its defining qualities. The problem is that steel spindle liners are not able to adequately reduce the vibrations that much. Urethane spindle liners are capable of providing the durability that the steel spindle liners can at a much lower cost. That is just one of the advantages. The second notable advantage that urethane spindle liners bring to the table is the fact that they significantly reduce the vibrations – at least a lot more than steel spindle liners do.
