Learning about Lathing Machines

Lathes are basically mechanical tools that can alter the shape of metal or wooden objects. These machines are able to convert cylindrical material by passing a cutting tool through it. Wood and metal lathes are the most commonly found lathing machines.

Wood lathes are generally used for shaping wood pieces like chair and table legs, while metal lathing is use to cut holes into metal items and finish corners and edges. Although the two types are used separately they can also be used in combination to perform multiple tasks for both wood and metal workers.

Since lathing machines are so commonly used in the manufacturing industry, it is essential for everyone associated with the industry to know about the various aspects of a lathing machine.

Important Elements
To get the most efficient lathing process and the desired results, it is necessary to operate the machine while being careful about some crucial elements. These elements are described below and need to be adjusted accurately for smooth functioning. The user also needs to be extra careful when deciding these rates as each material, size and shape requires an individually set unique value.

• Rotating Speed
The rotating speed represents the number of rotations made by the tool per metal piece. The speed is denoted as rpm and is usually set at a higher rate to speed up the lathing process. Accurate rotating speed guarantees a refined surface, but even a little mistake can lead to a serious malfunction or accident. Therefore it is suggested that workers be very careful when setting the speed. Moreover, it is better to start with slow pace.

• Cutting Depth
The depth setting affects the tools ability of processing and leveling the surface. A larger cutting depth causes a substantial increase in the plane temperature and creates a coarse surface. Therefore it is important to be sure about the correct measurement when setting the cutting intensity, as not only does it make the surface uneven, but also shortens the tool’s life.

• Feeding Speed
Feeding speed, also known as sending speed, is the processing speed that creates the final shape of the object being turned. A low feeding speed results in an attractive finishing job while an extremely high pace does the complete opposite.
The sending speed can either be set manually or automatically. Manual sending is recommended for beginners as it offers greater control over operating the handle. Automated sending is more advanced and is known to avoid accidents caused by touching the metal or handle being processed.

There are also a few important parts in a lathing machine that need to be focused on, such as:

1. Headstock: It is generally located at the left end of a lathe, and faces the operator. It contains crucial tools such as pulleys, belts, motors and bearings for producing perfect spinning.

2. Spindle: There are two spindles in the machine. One spindle is installed on the headstock and rotates the mounted items, while the second is found at the end of the machine.
