Step By Step Guide For Easy Spindle Installation
Friday, January 26, 2018

Mostly staircases are not attached with spindles mainly because they would need to be replaced later someday and get stuck in the holes either at the top or bottom of the stair rail.

Even though spindles don’t come installed, homeowners also don’t bother to have them attached later as they don’t want to pay extra dollars for something they don’t know is useful or not.

However, like several other home based projects, installing spindles can also be undertaken as a DIY project which is generally completed within an hour.

The step by step manual below will help homeowners in undertaking the spindle installation project at home and complete it effectively.

1. Firstly, collect the required tools for the project such as locking pliers, safety glasses, drill and drilling set, handsaw and wood glue. You would also need a replacement spindle, if replacing an old one. Also, the miscellaneous materials needed for the project are masking tape and finishing paint.

2. After collecting all the needed tools, make sure to not have any kids around the work area as drill bits and wood glue could be dangerous for them.

3. Now, with the support of a spirit level, place spindle perpendicularly against the hand or base rail to judge its length and position. With a pencil, gently scribe to mark the exact spot where the handrail and spindle assemble together.

4. After confirming the spindle’s length, use the marking as an outline to cut the spindle to the needed length and shape. Make sure that you keep checking how the spindle fits while marking and cutting the staircase attachment.

5. Now use the fillets to separate the spindles and rails. The fillets come in a uniform length and thus need to be cut to the desired length as marked earlier except for the first and last ones. The length and divisions of spindles according to the tread can be estimated by a general calculation of 2 spindles for each step.

6. To begin the actual installation, first fix the fillets into their appropriate places either on the base or handrail. After this, tightly attached the spindle against these fillets and make any necessary adjustments. Once satisfied, pin or glue the fillets into place and also add some at the end of the spindle to further fix it into the rail furrow.

7. After adjusting all the spindles and fillets while also bracketing the first and last ones, apply wood paste or glue on the cap faucet of the rails while gently tapping it on top.

8. Now that the spindle has been installed, check its position. Wipe clean the stair rails with a damp cloth.

The above eight steps guide should be able to aid homeowners in installing staircase spindles in less than an hour’s time. Although the procedure is widely an easy and safe one but people who aren’t very handy with tools are suggested to call for professional installation.

The manufacturer of our lathe recommended JF Berns liners and said they were the only way to go.  We ordered a liner system and it arrived in almost half the quoted lead time. Craftsmanship is excellent and far exceeds any other liners we have used.  We would not hesitate to tool up any of our turning centers with their products.
